You may have your bedtime routine nailed down to the T and may have also set up your room as a haven to clock in some deep sleep; but what you eat before you hit the sack can quietly have a major impact on the quality of your sleep and your ability to fall asleep.

These are some foods you want to be weary of right before you head off to sleep:

1. Water
If you love chugging a tall glass of H2O right before your head for your bed or are in the habit of waking up to drink up from that bottle kept at your bedside, chances are your body would have to fight off the urge (even in your deepest subconscious sleep state) to wake up in the middle of the night to urinate. Try and avoid drinking water three hours before you hit the bed.

2. Chocolate
Caffeine is the hidden substance in chocolate that won’t be doing your deep sleep any favors if you plan to have it as your dessert post dinner. The next time you take a bite of your favorite soufflé or chocolate dessert don’t be surprised by the natural arousal followed by the difficulty in maintaining deep sleep.

3. Ketchup
Can’t do without your ketchup? Try keeping it off your plate at night. Ketchup is an extremely acid combination due to the combination of tomatoes and other chemicals and preservatives that increase their acidity levels. This combination is a recipe for heartburn and indigestion when you get into bed.
