Are you someone who drinks a glass of orange juice everyday for its vitamin C and vitamin D content? Well, now here’s a benefit that may be much more significant for your health and well-being in the long run.

Turns out just a small glass of orange juice (around 200-250 ml) may be enough to lower your risk of dementia by 47 percent.

Dementia is a debilitating condition that robs you of your memory over a period of time. Considering there is still no cure for dementia, a condition that has affected an estimated 46.8 million people in 2015 and is set to rise to 131.5 million in 2050, is could be massive revelation in the medical domain.

Eating fruits and vegetables during early in life can reduce the risk of dementia. The study found that people who had regularly eat vegetables over two decades 17 percent less likely to develop moderate cognitive issues and 34 percent less likely to have major cognitive issues later on.

Only 6.9 percent of the people who drank orange juice everyday developed poor cognitive function, in comparison to 8.4 percent who drank orange juice less than once a month, according to the study published in journal Neurology.

“The protective role of regular consumption of fruit juice was mainly observed among the oldest men,” stated Changzheng Yuan, lead author of the study. “Since fruit juice is usually high in calories from concentrated fruit sugars, it’s generally best to consume no more than a small glass (four to six ounces) per day,” according to Reuters.

It might make more sense to continue eating vegetables, fruits, and orange juice in combination in the long run.
