WhatsApp recently updated its app with a bunch of new features, including hands-free voice note recording. Now, that app is testing a feature that would let you recover media you’ve accidentally deleted.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp’s latest beta build has a feature for Android that enable users to re-download a media file after it’s been accidentally deleted.

Until now, media files were deleted from WhatsApp servers once they were downloaded by the recipients. If they weren’t downloaded, the app’s servers would hold on to the file for 30 days, after which it was purged. Now, the company says media files will be kept online.

That way, if you delete, for example, a photo sent by another friend and then accidentally delete it, you can just visit it in your chat and download it once more.

During testing, WABetaInfo discovered they could recover deleted files as much as two months old. It’s unclear just how long WhatsApp will keep files online in this fashion.

But there’s no need to panic about your privacy, as the report indicates these saved files retain their end-to-end encryption.
